About the Founders
RYO / Co-founder
Born in Kanagawa, I pursued my academic path at the University of Tokyo, specializing in materials science with a focus on the mechanical properties and strength of metals.
It was during this rigorous period of study that I first encountered the world of authentic Japanese swords. I was instantly captivated—not just by their aesthetic beauty, but by the profound mastery of craftsmanship required to create them.

To deepen my understanding, I spent years independently researching the metallurgical characteristics of the katana, specifically investigating the secrets behind their legendary sharpness.
Complementing this academic research, I gained invaluable practical experience working at JFE, one of Japan’s leading steel manufacturers. This unique combination of scholarly study and industry expertise allows me to analyze the katana through a lens that few others possess.

On this site, I have shared summaries of my research for those who wish to explore the deeper, often mysterious capabilities of these blades. I believe that understanding the structural integrity and physics behind the katana’s design only enhances one’s appreciation of its beauty.
While the Japanese sword is rightfully admired today as a masterpiece of art, we must remember its origin as a formidable weapon forged for the battlefield. By bridging the gap between historical reverence and technical insight, I aim to offer a more profound and authentic perspective on what makes the katana a truly incomparable treasure.
MANATO / Co-founder
Born and raised in Kanagawa, I felt a powerful draw toward the cultural heart of Japan, which led me to pursue my studies at Kyoto University.
Living in Kyoto was a transformative experience; I spent my days immersed in the city’s timeless atmosphere, wandering through ancient temples and shrines, captivated by the weight of Japan’s living history.

During my university years, I had the privilege of interacting with many international visitors seeking an authentic experience of Japanese culture. These encounters opened my eyes to the deep respect and admiration that people around the world hold for our heritage.
It was through this realization that I felt a profound sense of pride and a calling to share the true essence of Japan with the world.
Upon graduation, I joined Mitsui & Co., one of the world’s leading global trading and investment enterprises. There, I gained a deep understanding of global market dynamics and the principles of international commerce. However, even as I navigated the world of high-level business, my heart remained tethered to the cultural essence of my homeland.

Driven by my early mission to preserve and share Japan’s profound legacy, I chose to leave my career in global trading to dedicate myself entirely to the world of the Katana—the ultimate symbol of the Japanese soul.
Unlike many other antiques, the value of a Katana is not determined by market trends alone, but by a delicate balance of craftsmanship, history, and spiritual significance.
My mission is to bridge professional market insight with a lifelong reverence for Japanese culture, ensuring that every masterpiece we offer is recognized and cherished for its true, uncompromising value.
Why We Created This Site
For many years, we have operated deep within the heart of the Japanese sword world, dealing exclusively with a select circle of professional sword merchants and high-end domestic collectors. Our work was focused on the private exchange of museum-grade masterpieces—blades that represent the pinnacle of Japanese history and craftsmanship.
However, as we engaged more with the international community, we discovered something profound: there are passionate collectors outside of Japan who possess a deep, sincere reverence for the “Japanese Heart” and the spirit of the Samurai. We encountered individuals whose dedication and discernment made them truly worthy guardians of these cultural treasures.
It was this realization that led to the birth of Ifu.
We decided to step beyond our traditional borders and open a private gateway for these international connoisseurs. By sharing a select portion of our exclusive collection, we aim to ensure that Japan’s finest blades find their rightful place in the hands of those who truly appreciate their soul, story, and significance. Ifu exists to bridge the distance between Japan’s guarded legacy and the world’s most dedicated enthusiasts.
The Meaning of “Ifu” (威風)
The name of our site, Ifu, is derived from the Japanese word “Ifu-Dodo” (威風堂々), which describes an appearance of majestic dignity and commanding presence.
A true masterpiece katana possesses a unique aura—a silent yet overwhelming power that commands respect the moment it is unsheathed. This “Ifu” is not merely about sharpness or strength; it is the manifestation of the swordsmith’s soul and the centuries of history the blade has survived.
Our wish in naming this site “Ifu” is to deliver that very sense of awe and dignity to our clients. We believe that when a collector holds a blade of such caliber, they are not just holding a weapon, but a symbol of unwavering spirit and pride. We created this space with the hope that our collection will bring a sense of majestic presence—Ifu—into the lives of those who become their next guardians.
