About This Site

Ifu – The Authentic Katana Lab is a curated collection site dedicated to Japanese swords.
Run by a small group of passionate specialists, it introduces only a handful of carefully selected authentic Katanas each month.
In addition to presenting rare pieces, Ifu also explores the cultural, historical, and structural depth of the Katana through original commentary and research.

About the Founders

RYO / Co-founder
Born in Kanagawa, I pursued my academic path at the University of Tokyo and its graduate school, where I specialized in materials science, focusing on the mechanical properties and strength of metals. It was during this time that I encountered the world of Japanese swords—and was instantly captivated by their profound beauty.

Since then, I have independently studied the metallurgical characteristics of Japanese swords, particularly intrigued by the question: Why is the sharpness of the Japanese sword said to surpass even modern blades? While many traditional explanations exist, I have aimed to explore the truth through a scientific lens—conducting my research while working at JFE, one of Japan’s leading steel manufacturers.

Some of the research papers featured on this site reflect these inquiries and offer meaningful insights into the science behind katana sharpness. I’ve summarized them in a digestible format, and I invite anyone fascinated by the mysterious capabilities of the katana to take a look.

Today, the Japanese sword is recognized as a work of art, admired for its form and history. But let us not forget: it was originally forged with the sole purpose of taking life. Understanding the physics and mechanics behind its deadly design can deepen your appreciation for the katana as both an object of beauty and a formidable weapon.

MANATO / Co-founder
I was born and raised in Kanagawa, but felt drawn to Kyoto—the cultural heart of Japan—and decided to leave the Kanto region to study at Kyoto University. While living there, I became completely immersed in Japan’s traditional culture, spending my days wandering through ancient temples and shrines as if under a spell.

Bachelor’s Degree Certificate from Kyoto University

Kyoto is one of Japan’s top destinations for international travelers, especially those seeking an authentic cultural experience. Through part-time work during my university years—often involving service to foreign visitors—I came to realize just how deeply Japanese culture is respected and cherished around the world. I felt genuinely proud to be part of that heritage.

It was only natural that I soon became fascinated by the Japanese sword—a symbol of Japan’s cultural and historical essence. I delved deeply into its background and significance, researching not only its historical and artistic value but also how such antiques are understood, appraised, and traded in today’s marketplace.

Unlike many antiques, where value is often based on broad factors like rarity or provenance, each katana must be evaluated on its own craftsmanship and condition. This makes pricing and selling them a complex task—but it’s also what makes collecting Japanese swords so exciting: no two are ever the same. Each is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a truly unique piece.

Why We Created Ifu
Ifu was founded by Ryo, Manato, and a small group of professionals—true enthusiasts and researchers who have dedicated themselves to the collection and study of Japanese swords. With extensive experience acquiring swords at various auctions and offering them to passionate collectors both in Japan and abroad, our team also has deep knowledge as dealers.

One day, we had a conversation within the team: perhaps overseas collectors, with their strong respect for Japanese culture, may actually treat Japanese swords with more care and reverence than many within Japan. This insight became the starting point for this project.

Unlike typical Japanese sword dealer websites that list a large number of items, our concept is simple: we introduce only a few truly valuable pieces each month—swords we can proudly present to collectors around the world.
