About the Founder

About Ryo

After conducting research on the strength and mechanical properties of materials at the University of Tokyo and its graduate school, I encountered the world of Japanese swords—and was instantly captivated by their profound beauty.

Since then, I have devoted myself to exploring not only the cutting performance and metallurgical characteristics of Japanese swords, but also their historical and cultural significance.

Together with Manato, I co-founded Ifu – The Authentic Katana Lab—a place where science, history, and deep appreciation for the soul of the sword come together.

About Manato

Born and raised in Kanagawa, I was drawn to the cultural heart of Japan—Kyoto—and decided to pursue my studies at Kyoto University. Surrounded by ancient temples, shrines, and traditional Japanese aesthetics, I immersed myself in Japan’s unique cultural heritage.

Living in a city so beloved by international visitors, I came to truly appreciate the profound global appeal of Japanese culture.

It was in this environment that I encountered the Japanese sword—and felt a deep, almost fated connection to it. Together with Ryo, I co-founded Ifu – The Authentic Katana Lab to share the beauty and soul of the katana with the world.
